Regular Maintenance is Required

Take a minute right now and think of the number one chore you really hate doing or seem to never be able to stay on top of…

Got it? Good.

For me, now full disclosure and remember this is a judgement free zone, it’s cleaning the shower.

I HATE cleaning shower!

So you know what happens? I put it off, put it off and put it off.

And every time I get in to take a shower I think, “Gah, my shower is SO gross!” immediately followed by the thought, “I can’t even deal with it, it’s so gross.”

Eventually, I do always face it in all its ickiness and I get my shower clean.

And after it’s done, never spotless mind you but back to a standard baseline of cleanliness, I always think…

“Man, this would be SO much easier if I just kept up with it regularly.”

Our mental health, our grief, our self care… all these things if they get left too long they get really icky too.

And if you are anything like me, especially when it comes to my grief, when I let it go too long without attention it gets so gross that the thought of facing it at all just feels too hard, like too much to deal with.

But I have also realised, that just like with my shower, if I keep up with it, commit to regular maintenance, it is so much easier to face.

And frankly, just like with my car and oil changes, as a human I run a whole lot better.

I am still practicing regular self maintenance and it takes a conscious effort.

Sometimes, I’m great at it. Other times, I don’t realize how long it’s been until the check engine light comes on… again.

It’s never too late to implement a self maintenance program and you don’t have to do it alone.
